Southern Black-Eyed Peas Recipe

This southern black-eyed peas recipe is a warm and soulful food that says happy new year better than any dish out there!

Originally, this Southern traditional dish  was/is served on New Year’s Day to bring good luck throughout the year! Now, whether, you believe that a certain food will influence the outcome of your year or not, I can guarantee that this delicious dish with a subtle bacon flavor will please your taste buds.

Southern Black-Eyed Peas Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups fresh/frozen black-eyed peas
  • 5 slices of bacon
  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 stalk celery, diced
  • 14 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 12 teaspoon salt

Directions:

  1. Sort and wash the black eyed peas and set aside.
  2. In a heavy sauté pan or 5 quart Dutch oven, cook bacon until crisp and then set aside to drain on paper towels.
  3. Sauté the onion, garlic, and celery in the bacon drippings until tender.
  4. Add in the chicken broth, salt, pepper and peas and bring to a boil. (Skim top if necessary)
  5. Lower heat to simmer then crumble the bacon and add to peas mixture.
  6. Taste and adjust for seasonings with pepper and salt if needed.
  7. Cover and simmer for about 30-60 minutes or until peas are tender.
  8. Serve and enjoy.

Note: This recipe could easily be turned into a vegetarian-friendly black eyed peas recipe by omitting the meat and using vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.
