Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

This easy chocolate buttercream frosting is so creamy, silky and chocolate perfection! It’s made with simple, easily available ingredients, like butter and vanilla, and it’s ready in just a couple of minutes.

This buttercream frosting is made with unsweetened cocoa powder, making it not too sweet. If you choose to use unsalted butter, be sure to add a couple pinches of salt. Also, be sure to have your butter at room temperature.

Using heavy cream will give you a slightly fluffier and lighter frosting. But using milk or half-and-half will also work just as incredibly.

This frosting makes for the perfect topping to any cake or cupcake you decide to whip up.

Ingredients:

  • 3 ½ – 4 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup salted butter (at room temperature)
  • 2-3 tablespoons whole milk, half-and-half, or cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. Add the butter into a mixing bowl, and use a hand or stand electric mixer to beat the butter on medium for about 4 minutes until pale. Scrape down the bowl as needed.
  2. Add in the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla, and 2 tablespoons of milk and mix on low speed until the powdered sugar and cocoa powder are well incorporated.
  3. If the frosting is too dry, add another tablespoon of milk. If the frosting is too wet, add powdered sugar a tablespoon at a time until it reaches a spreadable consistency.
