This easy chocolate buttercream frosting is so creamy, silky and chocolate perfection! It’s made with simple, easily available ingredients, like butter and vanilla, and it’s ready in just a couple of minutes.
This buttercream frosting is made with unsweetened cocoa powder, making it not too sweet. If you choose to use unsalted butter, be sure to add a couple pinches of salt. Also, be sure to have your butter at room temperature.
Using heavy cream will give you a slightly fluffier and lighter frosting. But using milk or half-and-half will also work just as incredibly.
This frosting makes for the perfect topping to any cake or cupcake you decide to whip up.

Chocolate Buttercream Frosting
Ingredients:
- 3 ½ – 4 cups powdered sugar
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup salted butter (at room temperature)
- 2-3 tablespoons whole milk, half-and-half, or cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions:
- Add the butter into a mixing bowl, and use a hand or stand electric mixer to beat the butter on medium for about 4 minutes until pale. Scrape down the bowl as needed.
- Add in the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla, and 2 tablespoons of milk and mix on low speed until the powdered sugar and cocoa powder are well incorporated.
- If the frosting is too dry, add another tablespoon of milk. If the frosting is too wet, add powdered sugar a tablespoon at a time until it reaches a spreadable consistency.
